Abbot Kinney originally started this project back in 1905 as part of his Venice of America vision. Kinney imagined coastal Los Angeles County reproducing the look, feel, and atmosphere of Venice in Italy.

After falling into disrepair in the 1940s, the canals were renovated in 1992 and re-opened in 1993. Since then, they have become one of Southern California’s most beloved landmarks.
