6 Chicago Beaches to Check Out With Your Friends This Summer

Chicago, Travel, Beach

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Chicago in the summer months, you’ll want to check out one of the city’s many beautiful beaches. Most of those beaches, which look out onto Lake Michigan, are easily accessible from downtown, which makes them a great option for visitors looking to soak up some sun.

Here are six beaches we recommend checking out next time you’re in Chicago.

North Avenue Beach

North Avenue Beach is probably Chicago’s most famous beach—and for good reason.

In addition to its postcard-worthy views, this beach features a 22,000 square foot beach house, some great waterfront dining options, bike and paddle board rentals, and plenty of interesting shops for souvenir hunters.

Montrose Beach

What’s better than a beautiful beach? A beautiful beach with free Wi-Fi!

Montrose Beach is a great choice for visitors who need to stay connected while they soak up the sun—or simply want to be able to post to Instagram. It also has two dog-friendly areas for your four-legged friends.

Ohio Street Beach

Chicago’s Ohio Street Beach is perched right between this city’s glimmering skyscrapers and the open expanses of the mighty Lake Michigan. In terms of scenery, it’s hard to beat.

It gets pretty crowded in the summer months, but all it takes to escape the hubbub is a dip into the water or a canoe or kayak ride.

Foster Avenue Beach

Foster Avenue Beach is a favorite for groups—from birthdays to beach parties. It’s also the setting of the Chicago Full Moon Jam (which is currently on hiatus due to the pandemic), an unforgettable celebration complete with fire-dancers, live music, and lots more.

Kathy Osterman Beach

Kathy Osterman Beach, which used to be known as Hollywood Beach, is a favorite among Chicago locals. The beach features a fishing pier, volleyball courts, on-site bathrooms, and best of all, some great swimming.

Leone Beach Park

Leone Beach Park is Chicago’s largest beach. The biggest perk of this one is the prevalence of open space. Whether you’re looking to absorb some rays or squeeze in some outdoor yoga, this is a solid choice. Just don’t forget your sunscreen!
